I’M GOING TO BRAZIL!
Easily the best Tour Announcement video I’ve ever seen! Not surprising that it comes from one of my favorite bands. Brazil…you lucky bitch…
AON Sessions: Ryan McLaughlin (Typefighter)- “Eggs”
I could go on for days about how much better DC’s underground artists are than any other city. On Wednesday I went to see Chuck Ragan play and DC local singer/song-writer Ryan McLaughlin opened. I had never heard of him, or Typefighter, before the show but he made me a fan right away. With a great sense of humor, catchy lyrics, aggressive undeniable guitar, and overpowering soul in his music it was hard not to join in on songs that I didn’t even know the words to.
If you ever get a chance to see McLaughlin (or Typefighter) I highly recommend it.
NO! WAIT! DON’T RUN AWAY!
I know “Hipster” has a certain stigma that a lot of people turn away from but you should know that I have been given the moniker of “Hipster” (by my girlfriend, friends, coworkers, etc). It happened by accident, really. It has never been a fashion thing for me either. I don’t have a moustache. I don’t wear ridiculous scarves and ironic t-shirts. I don’t dress to be a spectacle. I don’t do things ironically either; I have genuine enthusiasm and love to share my music and interests with people. I do shop at thrift stores but, come on, how can you pass up a deal?
For me, it’s always been about music. From the first time in 6th grade when I heard Queen and decided “screw pop music!” until I was in high school and bought The Clash’s “London Calling” and decided I was going to be a punk (even though I ended up listening to a LOT of ska). I was never drawn to the mainstream music and still have an aversion to it. The idea of a band recording, selling, touring, and being completely on their own has always been exciting and romantic to me.

So how did I go from “punk/rudeboy” to “hipster”? Easy answer: college. I started to explore more musical options. Still steering away from mainstream music, I delved into the internet and came out the other side retaining my DIY, anti-mainstream mentality.
To make a long story longer, after college I needed a creative outlet of some sort and this blog was created. I wanted to create a place to do reviews, news stories, commentary on things around me, share artists, and put things up that I’ve created. I hope you enjoy it (a least a little bit).
